A Few Basic Tips for Pool Care
Steps for keeping your pool water clean.
Skim the surface:
A pool care tip is to use a small, hand-held leaf skimmer to clear the surface of debris such as leaves, flower petals, grass, dirt and small insects.
Clean strainer baskets:
Clean the strainer baskets in the skimmer and pump. This is especially important since the pump circulates water through the filter and returns it to the pool.
Check the filter:
If the water seems a bit murky, check the filter – it may need cleaning. There are three types of filters that remove oils, grease and dirt from pool water. The high-rate sand filter is the most common type and is cleaned by back-washing, a process that reverses the flow of water through the filter and pumps it out via a waste line.
Brush the sides:
Use a soft brush to clean the walls of the pool. Make sure the brush is appropriate for your type of pool (e.g. vinyl, fiberglass, cement or gunite).
Vacuum:
Vacuum the pool at least once a week. Many types of hands-free cleaning devices are available for both inground and aboveground pools.
Test the water:
Purchase an easy-to-use test kit and follow the instructions. You can test the water in either the morning or evening, but do it at the same time each day. Be sure to reach far below the surface when getting a water sample.
Balance the pH:
The ideal pH level, between 7.2 and 7.6, helps chemicals disinfect the water, prevents scale from forming and stops corrosion. Add liquid, powder or tablet forms of chlorine or bromine to maintain a proper pH.
